Let’s Talk Carbs — Because Calories Aren’t the Whole Story

Hey y’all – Honey here!

Isn’t it something that restaurants are required to list calorie counts but not carbohydrates? For someone living with Type 1 diabetes, like me, it feels like we’re missing the mark.
I get that calories matter — especially in a country battling obesity-related complications — but let’s be honest: if someone is consistently overeating, chances are, they already know. What they may not know is how many carbs are hidden in that "healthy" grain bowl or artisanal flatbread.
And here’s the thing — for those of us who rely on insulin to stay alive, not knowing the carb count isn’t just inconvenient. It’s dangerous.
Carb counting is a daily necessity for me, but honestly, I believe we could all benefit from paying more attention to it. I’m not talking about jumping on some extreme low-carb bandwagon or swearing off fruit. I’m talking about balance. About learning to read a nutrition label and understanding the difference between processed, fast-burning carbs and slow-digesting, fiber-rich ones.
When you start tuning into your body’s response to food — blood sugar aside — you might notice things like clearer thinking, better sleep, improved mood, glowing skin, and yes, maybe even a lighter step. Eating for blood sugar stability is one of the kindest things you can do for your brain, heart, and hormones.
I don’t use any apps to count carbs — it’s second nature to me now — but there are some great free tools out there that can help if you’re just getting started. And if you’re not sure what carbs do or what a glycemic index even is, don’t worry. It’s never too late to learn.
You deserve to feel your best. And being mindful of carbs — not afraid of them — might just be a good place to start.
💛Honey tip: Good carbs aren’t the enemy. Pair them with fiber, fat, or protein to keep your energy steady and your body humming.
Counting carbs, living large, and loving life,
