🎉 The Life-Changing Dexcom G7 Lock Screen & Watch Hack for T1D

If you live with Type 1 diabetes, you know the drill — constant checks, endless little glances at your phone, and that awkward moment when people assume you’re scrolling social media or reading texts, when really, you’re just making sure your blood sugar is steady.
Well, I just discovered something that feels truly life-changing: you can set your Dexcom G7 glucose reading right on your iPhone lock screen and your Apple Watch. No unlocking, no swiping, no “Hey Siri” — just a quick, discreet glance, and you’re right back to living your life. 🙌
✨ Dexcom G7 on Your Lock Screen
Here’s how to add your glucose number front and center, without even unlocking your phone:
Update your Dexcom G7 app to the latest version.
Press and hold your Lock Screen until “Customize” appears.
Tap Customize → Lock Screen → Add Widgets.
Scroll until you see Dexcom G7 and tap to add it.
Hit Done — and there it is, your glucose number at a glance.
For me, this has been a sigh of relief. I recently stepped away from wearing my Omnipod and switched back to injections. I also moved my Dexcom to my stomach, and since the G7 is so tiny, it’s invisible under clothes. I finally feel like a normal person again.
On most days, I use about 14 units of insulin total (a mix of basal, bolus, and corrections). Of course, there are days I indulge and end up with a “17-unit day” — because sometimes life calls for an extra slice of bread or a piece of dessert, thank you very much 😘. Generally, though, I eat healthy, I move my body, and I feel great.
But even with good habits, one thing never changes: I need to know where my glucose is. Having it right on my lock screen is freeing. It’s discreet. It’s one less thing to explain.
And here’s the truth — whether it’s “good” or not, I let myself forget about having T1D for much of the day. It’s not the headline of my life; it’s just one piece of the story. Now, with my glucose showing up on my lock screen, it’s even easier. Just a quick glance, and I’m right back to living, loving, and having fun. That, to me, is what freedom looks like.
⌚ Dexcom G7 on Your Apple Watch
If you’re an Apple Watch user, you can take this one step further. With the Dexcom G7 Watch App, your glucose readings can show up right on your wrist.
I set mine up with the modular face, so I see three things at a glance:
The date (because life is busy!)
My blood sugar
My daily walking distance (because movement is medicine)
It’s simple, practical, and powerful. Now I don’t even have to reach for my phone to know where I stand — and that feels incredibly freeing.
How to Set It Up
Make sure your Dexcom G7 iPhone app is updated.
Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
Scroll down to Available Apps → install Dexcom G7.
Go to Face Gallery → choose a watch face (like “Modular”).
Add the Dexcom complication to a slot.
Save and sync.
That’s it — you’re good to go. Your glucose updates will appear right alongside whatever else matters most to you.
Honey Note 🍯
To all my fellow T1D warriors: little tweaks like this matter. It’s not about making diabetes disappear — it’s about making it fit into our lives, not the other way around. This lock-screen widget and watch face may seem small, but for me, it feels like taking a deep breath. Like having one less thing to explain. Like reclaiming a little more normalcy.
If you haven’t tried it yet, go set it up. You’ll thank yourself every single day. 💛
Living lighter, freer, and always grateful for the hacks that help us thrive,
