The Sweetest Choice: Rethinking Sugar, Celebrating Fruit, and Eating with Intention

There’s a powerful quote that echoes in my mind often: “Let food be thy medicine.” I believe it, live by it, and love learning more about it.

One of the most eye-opening reads I’ve come across recently is from Dr. Michael Greger at NutritionFacts.org, titled “Eating to Help Control Cancer Metastasis.” It’s a beautifully researched reminder that what we eat can either fuel disease—or help fight it.

As someone who’s walked the road of a cancer diagnosis, this topic hits close to home. I know firsthand how precious health is, and how much power we hold every single day by choosing what we feed our bodies.

One of the biggest culprits we’re up against? Sugar.

Cancer loves sugar. That’s not just a theory—it’s science. Sugar feeds inflammation, disrupts insulin levels, and can create an internal environment that’s far too welcoming to disease. Of course, our bodies do need glucose to function, but the real trouble comes from the excess—especially the kind found in sodas, juices, sugary coffee drinks, processed snacks, and those deceptively “healthy” cereals and granola bars.

Here’s my take: treats should be just that—treats. Not everyday habits, not comfort crutches, and definitely not our norm. A treat should be something we truly savor and look forward to… not something we mindlessly grab out of habit or convenience.

And when it comes to satisfying that sweet tooth in a healthful way? Let’s talk about nature’s candy: fruit. Whole, colorful, gorgeous fruit. Fruit is packed with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and water—everything that helps our bodies thrive.

There are so many ways to enjoy fruit that feel special and even a little elegant:

  • 🍓 Grill peaches or pineapple for a warm, caramelized treat

  • 🍒 Top warm berries with a small dollop of fresh whipped cream or a spoon of good vanilla bean ice cream

  • 🍌 Pair sliced banana with a drizzle of almond butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon

  • 🫐 Blend frozen berries and banana into a creamy, dreamy “nice cream”

  • 🍏 Enjoy apple slices with a touch of peanut butter or a side of Greek yogurt topped with a drizzle of honey and some almond slivers

The options are endless—and they’re far more nourishing than that sugar-laden pastry calling your name from the coffee shop counter.

I’m not about deprivation. Life should include joy and celebration and deliciousness. But I am about mindfulness. Choosing better, even most of the time, adds up in a big way over the years. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being intentional.

We have so much control over our health simply by minding what we put in our mouths and our bodies. And that, my friends, is a sweet truth worth savoring.

With hope, health, and honey,
