💅 What Your Nails May Be Trying to Tell You (And Why It’s Not Just Vanity)

If you’ve ever looked down at your nails and thought, “Hmm… what’s going on here?”—you are not alone. Our nails might be tiny, but they are mighty little messengers when it comes to our overall health. From brittleness and ridges to peeling or discoloration, those subtle signs can sometimes reflect what’s happening inside our bodies—and our lives.

So what does it mean when your nails have vertical ridges and possibly even start splitting?

These ridges—also called longitudinal striations—can be a totally normal part of aging (yes, even our nails get wrinkles!). But when they come with cracking, dryness, or dullness, your body may be quietly asking for a little extra TLC.

🧬 Top Nutritional Reasons Your Nails Might Be Struggling:

  • Biotin (B7) – Helps strengthen the protein structure of your nails.

  • Iron – Low iron or ferritin can make nails brittle or spoon-shaped.

  • Zinc – Crucial for healthy nail growth and repair.

  • Magnesium – Plays a role in protein synthesis, including keratin.

  • Protein – Nails are made of keratin, a protein, so diets low in protein can show up at your fingertips.

  • Omega-3s – These good fats keep nails hydrated and nourished.

🥗 Nail-Nourishing Foods

You don’t need a cabinet full of pills (though the right supplement can help). Sometimes the best medicine is found right on your plate:

  • 🥚 Eggs, lentils, and salmon

  • 🥬 Spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots

  • 🥜 Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds

  • 🫐 Berries and other antioxidant-rich fruits

Pair that with plenty of water, gentle nail care, and a pause on harsh manicures, and you’ve got a great foundation for healthier nails.

🧴 Nail TLC: It’s the Little Things

  • Massage cuticle oil or coconut oil in nightly.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water (yes, those dish gloves matter!).

  • Keep nails trimmed and smooth—less surface for peeling.

  • Take breaks from polish or gel if your nails are feeling fragile.

🩺 When to Ask Your Doctor

If changes persist, or you notice thickening, discoloration, or pain, it’s always a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider. You might ask for labs like:

  • Iron panel (especially ferritin)

  • Vitamin D and B12

  • Thyroid function (TSH, Free T4)

  • Magnesium and zinc levels

🍯 Honey Note

Sweet friend, it’s okay if your nails don’t look perfect. Mine sure don’t. But I’ve learned that when we start listening to our bodies—whether it’s a tired nail, a dry patch of skin, or a worn-out heart—we begin to care for ourselves with a gentleness that heals more than we even realize. Your beauty isn’t in your nails, or your hair, or your skin… but if a little self-care brings you peace or confidence, then I say do it. With love.

With you in health and joy,

MaryNell (aka Honey)

P.S. You’re not high-maintenance for wanting to feel beautiful—you’re just honoring your spark. And that is lovely.
