Trust Your Gut: How My Inner Clock (and My Gut!) Found Its Rhythm

Lately, I’ve been sleeping like I haven’t in years — the kind of deep, easy sleep that feels like my body sighs, “Finally.” I started going to bed before 9:00 PM, usually fast asleep by 9:45, and no later than 10. My alarm goes off at 4:45 AM, and even if I linger for a few quiet minutes, by 5:00 my feet are on the floor and I’m out the door for a brisk 3.5 to 4-mile walk.
It’s become my rhythm — my body’s natural song.
And now that I’ve learned how our gut actually knows the time of day, I can feel that inner symphony tuning itself in. It’s not just my mind that’s clearer — my gut is happier, too.
🌞 Your Gut Has a Clock (and It’s a Smart One)
Your gut isn’t just a tube that digests food. It’s an intelligent ecosystem with its own circadian rhythm — a built-in clock that syncs with the rise and fall of the sun.
During the day, your microbiome shifts toward bacteria that specialize in digestion and energy production. Enzymes and secretions increase to help you absorb nutrients efficiently.
By night, a different community of microbes takes over — the night shift — repairing your gut lining and helping balance immunity.
In other words, your gut literally knows when it’s daytime and nighttime, and it behaves accordingly. It wants you to eat with the sun and rest with the moon.
That’s why consistent meal times, sleep, and light exposure are more powerful than most people realize — they keep your internal orchestra playing in perfect time.
💊 Even Without a Pancreas, My Gut Still Knows What to Do
Since I no longer have a pancreas, my digestion relies on pancreatic enzyme replacement — little capsules that stand in for what my body once made. But here’s the miracle: my gut still knows how to dance.
My stomach still produces acid and enzymes. My liver still makes bile. My small intestine still absorbs nutrients and moves in rhythm. And my microbiome — those trillions of tiny cohabitants — still hum along to my body’s daily beat.
I find that incredible. The human body is so wise. Even when one instrument retires, the orchestra finds a way to keep the music playing.
🌅 The Morning Rhythm
Those early walks have become my favorite time of day. The world is quiet, the air is cool, and my thoughts stretch awake right alongside my body. I start with a podcast, usually something that sparks curiosity — science, wellness, or mindset — and I find myself asking better questions all day long.
By sunrise, I’ve already moved, breathed, and filled my mind with something that inspires me. I’m more grounded. More centered. And my gut seems to know it too.
When I eat breakfast afterward, my body feels ready — like it was expecting it.
🌙 The Evening Wind-Down
Evenings are now my time to exhale. I can cook (one of my loves), stretch, or meditate.
Sometimes I see friends. Sometimes I just enjoy the quiet. The beauty of waking up early is that it doesn’t take away from the fun parts of life — it just shifts them into a rhythm that serves my well-being.
And I’ve learned something powerful: when I live in rhythm, I think more clearly and feel more peaceful. I no longer waste energy trying to control what I can’t. My focus has shifted inward — toward what I can nurture — my health, my heart, and my gut.
🧠 The Second Brain
Science calls the gut the “second brain” for a reason. It has its own nervous system (the enteric nervous system) that communicates directly with the brain. It produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine — the same “feel-good” chemicals that regulate mood.
So when your gut is happy and in sync, your mood often follows. And when your rhythm honors that inner timing, you’re giving both brains — the one in your head and the one in your belly — the chance to thrive together.
🍯 Honey Note
Your gut is a quiet genius.
It listens when you feed it well.
It smiles when you move with the sun.
And it rests when you do.
I used to think healing was about willpower.
Now I know it’s about rhythm.
The kind that starts with curiosity, flows with grace,
and hums — quietly but confidently — beneath the surface of everything you do.
Trust your gut. It’s been keeping time all along.
Because when your body finds its rhythm, your soul can finally dance —
Honey
